About
Somewhere on the playa
Hi, I'm Tomas. I'm a site reliability engineer and team lead, and I've spent most of the last twenty years keeping software running: over a decade at a global open source software company, building and operating managed Kubernetes, and now leading the team behind an enterprise AI platform.
I started out looking after systems for luxury hotel groups. Before that, as a teenager, I ran a small internet provider from my parents' house on a NetBSD router, and later sold it.
One day, by pure chance, I found a Power Mac 9500 someone had left on the kerb, wired my own serial cable to reach its firmware console, netbooted NetBSD onto it and ran it from a closet in a rented house. The NetBSD developers on the mailing list helped me through it.

Somewhere along the way I became a Fedora contributor and packager, wrote code that ended up in Ingenuity, the helicopter on Mars, and served as CTO of the Australian Slacklining Association.
This is where I write up what I build at home: Linux, virtualisation, networking and Kubernetes, done hands-on. Every article is something I've actually run, with the commands to follow along and recordings of the terminal.
Projects
kinc: Kubernetes, rootless, in containers.
faro: watches a Kubernetes cluster and records every change.
ukko: sorts a Gmail inbox automatically, with Google Apps Script.
